Frequently asked orthodontic questions

Before you start out on your orthodontic treatment journey with us here at GG Orthodontics, we want to ensure all your questions have been answered. We’re happy to discuss any queries or concerns you have at your , but to you may find a few answers here to start.

Orthodontics is the part of dentistry that focuses specifically on irregularities of the face and teeth. Using orthodontic appliances, such as braces and aligners, orthodontists devise a treatment plan that straightens teeth, corrects jaw alignment and improves facial profile.

An orthodontist has specialised in the field of orthodontics and has done so by embarking on further professional training, in addition to their initial dentistry training. Both an orthodontist and a dentist will have a Bachelor of Dentistry, but only orthodontists have a Master of Orthodontics.

You may experience some mild discomfort during specific phases of your orthodontic treatment, usually just after braces have been tightened or when you have been issued with a new set of aligners. Over-the-counter pain relief can remedy this.

Yes, it is very important to continue to see your dentist during orthodontic treatment because your dentist and your orthodontist play different roles in your oral care. We will keep your dentist informed of your orthodontic treatment though.

Orthodontic treatment is a specialist treatment but it is affordable. At GG Orthodontics, we want to ensure all of our patients get the treatment they need to improve their smile. We will give you a treatment plan that includes the cost of your treatment without any hidden costs and will discuss our interest-free financing options with you.

The length of time orthodontic treatment takes depends on the treatment you need but most cases take between 12 and 24 months. At GG Orthodontics we treat each of our patients individually so treatment time does differ between each person. We will be able to advise you on the length of your treatment at your free consultation.

Yes we do, and at GG Orthodontics you will be in the care of one of the most experienced Invisalign orthodontists in the country. Dr Gardner has been offering Invisalign treatment since it was first launched in the UK in 2001 and holds Invisalign Diamond status in recognition of the more than 600 patients he has treated with the system.

Invisalign can be used to treat simple and complex orthodontic problems and is very effective in doing both. If you can benefit from Invisalign treatment it is extremely unlikely you will need to wear braces as well. At your initial consultation with us, we will be able to identify which treatments are suitable for you and which one we believe you’d most benefit from.

Once you have completed your orthodontic treatment and your braces or aligners have been removed, we will fit you with a retainer. This will help to keep your teeth in their new position. There are two types of retainers: fixed retainers are made up of a small wire that is fitted at the back of your teeth; removable retainers are like thin mouthguards. We will advise you on the length of time you should wear your retainer to ensure your teeth don’t move back into their old position.
